I wanted to do this for a while now, so here it is.
The queer subtext in the Hungarian translation of ACD canon.
Not only did they not erase the queer subtext, they actually added some (I’m saying “they” because 11 people translated it).
A few examples:
Holmes says “a gun and a toothbrush is all we need”. In the translation they felt the need to make this more clear, so instead he says “a gun and one toothbrush…”.
In The empty House, instead of “My dear Watson” he simply says “Darling”.
In The 3 Garridebs, he says “for the love of God, say that you’re not hurt!” In Hungarian, we have to “you"s: “te”, the friendly, and “ön”, the formal. In the Victorian era, only couples (and young children) called each other “te”. You had to call your parents & friends (unless you were a kid, than you were allowed to call people your age “te”) “ön”. But here, when he says “Say that you’re not hurt!!” he uses “te”.
In the Devil’s foot, the English version Watson says “..For I have never seen so much of Holmes’s heart before” . This was translated as “for Holmes had never shown his feelings for me more clearly”.
These are just a few examples, tell me if you’re interested and I’ll look for more :>

@astudyincanon @handl0ck I thought you might be interested in this :3

I am loving these translation posts!  The differences are so interesting!  I am going to start tagging these #a study in languages.  That should be easy enough to remember.  I’ll go back and add the tag on the other posts for consistency.

@johnlock-empire thank you for messaging me!  (If I ever miss a post feel free to point it out.  The tags don’t always work as they should, and sometimes I miss a notification.  I don’t mind links if you think I missed something.)
